More than 8,900 cases of HIV/AIDS have been reported on Long
Island over the past 25 years. As such, Long Island has one of the
highest incidence rates of AIDS cases among suburban areas in the
United States. Catholic Charities offers services to meet some of the
special needs of people living with the disease. Catholic Charities
addresses those issues with respect and compassion regardless of a
client's religious beliefs or sexual orientation. All services are
provided in a confidential and supportive environment.
Special Needs Housing
Catholic Charities provides low-income special needs housing
because Long Island's high cost of living can be especially hard on
families with one or more HIV-ill members. Special needs housing
currently provides 25 affordable rental units for individuals, couples,
and families. More units are planned for the near future. Families
in the special needs housing residences have access to social work
and case management services, as needed.
Special Dental Services
Catholic Charities began providing dental services to people
living with HIV/AIDS 17 years ago. The state-of-the-art program
has earned several awards and commendations over the years.
