The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) offers free, nutritious foods to seniors aged 60 years of age and older, and to some women and children that are not eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program. In addition to providing clients with a monthly food package, CSFP offers clients guidance in preparing nutritious meals (including cooking demonstrations), nutrition and health information provided by nutritionists, and referrals to health care and social service agencies for other needed services.
CSFP provides more than 11,000 food
packages each month to eligible Long Islanders at two sites in
Freeport and Wyandanch and through a number of mobile units.
Since it began in September 1988, CSFP has distributed
approximately two million packages of food to eligible women,
children, and seniors throughout Long Island.
CSFP is a collaborative effort between Catholic Charities, the New
York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), and the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Services Provided
CSFP Sites
Certifiers at the CSFP permanent and mobile sites interview
potential participants to determine whether they meet financial
guidelines. Once certified, re-certification is required after six
months. Participants can choose from a range of foods such as
canned fruits and vegetables, powdered and evaporated milk,
cheese, canned meats and tuna, juice, rice, pasta, instant potatoes,
hot and cold cereals, peanut butter, dried beans, and juice.
A number of mobile CSFP trucks make monthly stops
throughout Long Island, making it easier for participants to pick
up food. More than 70 stops are currently scheduled.
A nutritionist provides monthly cooking demonstrations in
Nassau and Suffolk and offers suggestions for meal plans using
CSFP food. To schedule a demonstration or to receive a telephone
consultation, please call (631) 491-4166, Monday through Friday,
between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
