The office for persons with disabilities (OPD) encourages clients
to attain their highest possible level of independent, socially
integrated, and productive living.
Services Provided
Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired
Services for the blind and visually impaired: Orientation and
mobility instruction enables clients to function independently
and safely in their neighborhoods, work places, and other daily
environments and to use public transportation. Rehabilitation
training helps newly disabled people acquire communication and
daily living skills like Braille, telecommunications, cooking, home
management, and handling money. Counseling enables clients
to adjust to their vision loss.
Senior Deaf Club
A senior deaf club in Wantagh meets weekly for a hot lunch,
recreation, and group activities.
Thea Bowman Residence
Thea Bowman Residence provides 31 units of housing for people
with physical disabilities. The first of its kind on Long Island,
the residence stands alongside OPD at Catholic Charities'
Amityville site.
Visually Impaired Persons (VIP) Center
The visually impaired persons (VIP) center in Nassau County
provides visually impaired adults the opportunity to share in
weekly recreational, educational, and interfaith programs. Limited
transportation and a hot lunch are provided.

Eligibility and Fees
Anyone living with a vision or mobility impairment on Long Island
is eligible for general OPD services. To be eligible for the Thea
Bowman Residence, an applicant must have a qualifying visual,
hearing, or mobility impairment and be of low-income. Rent is
charged as a percentage of income.
