    Mary's Residence
A Community Makes Room for Single Moms

Now there's even more support for unwed, young mothers who choose life. On October 6th, Catholic Charities dedicated Mary's Residence, a new transitional living facility located next door to our Regina Residence in Merrick. The home is an extension of Regina's 40-year-old program offering housing and supportive services to single mothers and their children.

Mary's Residence was the result of an extraordinary coming together of various members of the community who generously offered both time and funds. The prior owners of the property, former neighbors of Regina, desired to advance the program's mission by offering to sell the property below market value to Catholic Charities. An anonymous donor then gave $100,000 to be used for major renovations including a new roof and energy efficient windows, doors, heating and electrical systems. The Marianist religious order on Long Island then stepped forward to coordinate the remaining renovations. More than 100 student volunteers and their families from Chaminade and Kellenberg high schools and St. Martin de Porres elementary school worked with their faculty to transform the residence with an estimated $150,000 worth of renovations inside and out. At the dedication, Bishop Murphy announced that the diocese of Rockville Centre would match those generous gifts by pledging another $250,000 to support the residence.

"It was an unlikely project at an unlikely time," notes Laura Cassell, Chief Executive Officer of Catholic Charities. "Everyday Long Islanders are suffering by this economy like everyone else and yet here are those same friends and neighbors, rolling up their sleeves to make a home for the most vulnerable families. It speaks to the generosity of our communities and I can't say enough about the young people who gave up their vacations and weekends to work on this home."

The new home offers an additional 12 to 24 months of housing for those who have graduated from Regina Residence. Regina Maternity Services provides optimal support for young women to help them develop into responsible, loving, working mothers. Those seeking more information can call (516) 223-7888.
