Frequently Asked Questions

   FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How much time do I need to give as a volunteer?
This may vary according to the type of program from a few hours a week to a few hours a month. Ongoing, one-to-one type of service with an individual client will require a commitment of 2 hours a week.

I am in school during the day. Can my service time work around my schedule?
Yes, we are able to be flexible in many programs.

I work full time during the week. Can I volunteer on weekends or evenings?
Yes, in specific programs such as the Residential programs and the Friendly Visitor Programs one can volunteer on the weekends. Special projects such as painting and recreational events usually take place on the weekends. Other programs such as Meals on Wheels and Senior Community Centers operate during the day.

I really am only interested in a special project a few times a year. Can I do that?
Yes, we welcome your presence no matter how limited your time is.

I'd really like to work with children. Do you have programs for children?
The only children we work with in programs are 14 and over. These are emotionally disturbed children and pregnant and parenting adolescents. Our maternity services at Regina Residence, however, can use some volunteers to help with the babies and toddlers during the day.

What's the procedure to become a volunteer?
All volunteers need to fill out an application and be interviewed either by the Volunteer Coordinator or by the Program Administrator of your specific program. An orientation to the agency will be offered before you begin. Some programs require formal training, such as the Office for the Mentally Retarded/Developmentally Disabled, the Mentoring Program, and the Friendly Visitor Program.

What if I am not comfortable with my assignment?
We want you to enjoy your service. Any difficulties with service can be addressed to the Volunteer Coordinator at 516-733-7044.
